Berlin AI Think Tank | Open Community Session

What does Germany need to put in place now, and what role can Berlin play, to build a competitive, sustainable and fair European AI music market?

The Berlin AI Think Tank brings together representatives from music, research, technology, law, rights management and policy to examine how the European AI and music market needs to function as it develops.

This Open Community Session brings music creators, artists, managers, political and policy participants and the wider music community into the discussion.

Key outcomes from the Think Tank’s working session will be shared, where appropriate, and discussed from the perspective of the wider community, with a focus on transparency, licensing, attribution, fair remuneration and the legal and practical conditions needed for implementation.

The session will be held in English.

Developed in collaboration between the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM), AIxchange, Fraunhofer IDMT and CIC Berlin, with MWM supporting community participation.

Studio Visit with Stefanie Egedy

Artist Stefanie Egedy welcomes delegates into her working environment for an introduction to her practice with sound, spatial perception and low-frequency vibration.

Low-frequency sound artist and composer Stefanie Egedy creates embodied vibrational experiences grounded in sound as a physical force through site-specific installations, commissioned works and compositions. Sub-bass, bass and infrasound (LFS) — their tactility and capacity to permeate and traverse space, perceived by the skin and the body rather than the ear alone, form the core of her artistic practice. Her work explores the relationships between sound waves, architectural bodies and human bodies, investigating the physiological and somatic effects of LFS on human perception and bodily experience. Egedy’s practice builds two bodies of work: BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.), which explores the sculptural presence of subwoofers and their relationships with human and architectural bodies through LFS, and SONIC ENERGETICS, which creates LFS environments that support somatic grounding and inner orientation. Immersed in this context, she articulates the crossing between sonic and musical language to investigate sonic communication between beings.

Was macht eigentlich ein Artist Manager?

Beyond the Booking

Agents do much more than confirm dates: they decide which artists to take on, shape how careers are positioned, maintain business relationships and have a unique overview of the whole ecosystem. Most of their work is invisible – including to their own artists.

This 90-minute session will expose the operational reality of the role, from what goes on inside an agency to how they interact with promoters on the other side of the table. This session will deconstruct what actually happens inside an agency and explore different agency models. It will also explore the various approaches to work including how agents choose artists and build healthy working relationships. The session will teach how agents can position themselves and develop their own tastes, networks and goals.

Participants will leave with a clear picture of where the agent sits in the electronic music ecosystem, where their own work sits alongside it, how to build an agency and what they should be asking next.

Collective Listening through Imagination

This presentation explores themes of sound and imagination through research-led practice. Based on the work of Pauline Oliveros and Bryon Gysin, Sonia Killmann‘s research focuses on active listening through mental imagery in collective listening spaces. The research is shared through workshop performances that have a participatory element rooted in collective improvisation and promote imaginative listening through closed eyes. Sonia Killmann will share current reflections of a workshop performance conducted at Open Out festival in Tromsø with cellist Simone Seales This performance took place in a queer-only space. After the reflection, Sonia will lead a collective listening exercise to demonstrate their research to this date.

Rewiring Classical Artistic Development

Classical musicians are trained for precision – but mastery doesn’t automatically create openness to uncertainty. What would change if artistic agency, not artistic selection, became the starting point of how artists are developed? Krisana Locke (somatic & tantric practitioner), Jürgen Grözinger (conductor & sound healer) and Anja Bien (CEO, Hamel Foundation) share insights from IMPROVISO, a research-based mentorship, improvisation and embodied agency.
