Zurich-born, Berlin-based DJ AYA has a keen eye for finessing the vitality, sexiness and punch of any given dancefloor. Their first love, UK bass, captured their imagination over a seven-year stint in London and brought them into electronic music’s binding fold. Bass’ quintessential groove and playfulness have been a lens informing AYA’s gravitational pull towards different genres. From immersive, clean techno kicks to diasporic motifs like grime vocals and reggaeton beats, AYA sees mixing as an opportunity to express the wide-ranging palate they’ve cultivated as a listener. In only a handful of years, AYA’s career has quickly blown up to whirlwind status with a far-reaching roster of weekly gigs, including standouts like Khidi in Tbilisi, Boiler Room sets in Lisbon and Berlin and label Live From Earth’s Panorama Bar showcase. DJ AYA, whose intention is always “to bring the queers to dance”, finds great inspiration in the camaraderie of Berlin’s local scene, along with exploring new underground communities in cities like Istanbul and Tokyo.

More Than a Party: Queer Spaces and the Future of Music Culture

Across the world, queer clubs and dedicated LGBTQIA+ nightlife spaces are disappearing under combined social and economic pressures, but at the same time, queer sound artists have become increasingly visible within mainstream club culture.

What is lost when dedicated queer venues disappear? How does queerness continue to shape the ways music spaces are imagined, organised and experienced?

Bringing together club operators, cultural workers and researchers, this session explores the political, social and cultural importance of queer nightlife infrastructures. The conversation asks how queer communities are responding to urban pressures, what new forms of gathering are emerging and how queer approaches to care, programming, accessibility and collective ownership might offer models for the future.
.
At a time when many cities are losing dedicated queer venues, this session examines not only what is disappearing, but also what new possibilities are being created.
