Zaydoun Hajjar is a Palestinian researcher and PhD candidate in Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, alongside his work at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS). With a background in Migration Studies and Sociology, his research focuses on cultural production, music, and migration within the context of colonial relations, structures, and capitalist markets. His current PhD research is rooted in the experiences of Mashriqi musicians from Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Jordan who are currently based in Berlin, and explores how the cultural structures around them shape their cultural agency.

Sounding the System

Creating niche music can present its own rewards and setbacks. Many artists continue to face challenges when performing in venues where assigned technical teams are unfamiliar with the specific sonic and cultural nuances of their music. This roundtable explores the importance of technical collaboration, the role of external engineers, and how venues can better support artists whose sound falls outside familiar production norms.
