It’s easy to get distracted by the billion-dollar valuations, meta-data deluges, and breathless hype that accompanies music technology. So MW:M19 is striking a balance and widening our focus to look at the social impact of music and technology.
MW:M will be giving space to untold narratives from under-represented perspectives this year. We’re thrilled that Prof. Donna Hope – Professor of Culture, Gender and Society at the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica – will be at MW:M to explore the often-overlooked and vital role of women in dancehall. Prof. Donna Hope reveals what musical and social stories are hidden in dancehall and how the genre encourages women to express their sexuality beyond the male perspective.
