Whether it’s inside the GEMA black boxes in clubs or assigning samples online – Music Recognition Technology (MRT) is the central tool for clearing musical copyright. But is the software already sofisticated enough to track short-time samples and to recognize cut and chopped remixes played by DJs on the dance floor? And most importantly: what are the mechanisms in place that ensure a fair compensation to the right owners at the end of the day?
